An early 20th century art pottery vase by S & E Collier, Reading from their “Silchester Ware” range of art pottery. This example has a Romanesque two handled shape decorated with a texture very dark brown glaze. Impressed makers marks on the underside together with a shape number of 206.
S & E Colliers were a firm of brick makers based at the Groveland Works near Reading. They produced art pottery that was inspired by the excavations at the nearby Roman Town of Silchester. They produced a catalogue for the range which illustrates over 400 shape. Some were designed by a Mrs Bowley.
