An early 20th century German salt glazed stoneware drinking stein by Merkelbach and Wick.
It is decorated with an art nouveau “Jugendstil” design of stylised leaves and tendril in a typical blue and grey colour.
Marked on the underside with the impressed mark that was in used from c1880-1920.
The design suggests a date of c1905 and it is understoof at this time the makers were producing designs by Peter Behrens, Albin Muller, Henry van de Velde and Patriz Huber (1878-1902). Although there isn’t a designer’s signature, I think that Patriz Huber is the stongest candidate.
