A fine original copper plate dry point etching with hand tinting of the Hollywood actress Mae Murray by the artist Frank Martin (1921-2005)

Published in 1987 in a numbered edition of 50. This version is numbered 28/50.

Mae Murray (1889-1965); “The Girl with the Bee Stung Lips” also know as “The Gardenia of the Screen”, was born Marie Adrienne Keonig in Virginnia, USA. She took to the stage at an early age and first appeared on Broadway partnering the ballroom dance star Vernon Castle in the 1906 show “About Town”. Soon after this initial break through, she joined the chorus line of the Ziegfeld Follies and by 1915 she was one of their headline names appearing in show in Paris partnering such names as Rudolph Valentino and Clifton Webb. …. Hollywood and stardom followed.

Riva Bella – by Frank Martinstock #7113

A fine original etching on zinc in colour titled “Riva-Bella” by the artist Frank Martin (1921-2005). The composition features a fashionable your “actress” lounging on a beach in front of an art deco style building.

Unusually this picture was created using 2 plates which results in a embossed line between the beach and the building.

Published 1971 in a numbered edition of 25, this version is a scarce “artists proof” and is signed, titled and annotated on pencil.

Lya de Putti – by Frank Martin- stock #6913

A fine original copper plate dry point etching with colour of Lya de Putti by the artist Frank Martin (1921-2005). Published 1975 in a numbered edition of 40, this example is numbered 37/40 in pencil.

Fully signed, titled and numbered in pencil. Presented newly framed and ready to hang.

Lya was a Hungarian dancer, actress and Hollywood star. She was born Amália Putti the daughter of a cavalry officier. She began her stage career on the Hungarian Vaudeville circuit before performing ballet in Berlin, becoming “premiere danseuse” at the Berlin Winter Garden in 1924. She travelled to America in 1926 to pursue a career in Hollywood.

Sadly she failed find the success she desired as her foreign accent was not popular with casting directors. She had left the film industry by 1929 in an attempt to re-start her career on Broadway before moving to England to make silents films and study English language.

Her career was cut short by her tragic death aged 34, after she was hospitalized to have a chicken bone removed from her throat. The resultant developed into pleurisy in her right side, followed by pneumonia in both lungs.

She featured in a series of cigarette cards, called “Beauties of Today” issued in 1938 and she had an uncredited part in the 1934 film “Murder at the Vanities”

An original dry point etching with hand tinting of the Hollywood actress known as “Annabella”. This version is an artist’s proof and is signed and titled in pencil. Published in an edition of 50 plus proofs.

“Annabella” was the stage name of the French actress Suzanne Georgette Charpentier (1907-1996). Annabella was a star of French movies during the 1930′s before moving to Hollywood in 1938, where she met and married Tyrone Power.She appeared in over 40 films from 1927 until the 1950′s.
