Rosa Ramalho – Queen Figurine – stock #20417
An outstanding large folk art pottery figurine of a flower Queen by the Portugese artist Rosa Ramalho. It is naively modelled and glazzed in a rich mustard yellow colour. Signed RR on the foot rim. There are some areas of glaze flaking which have been over-painted – most likely in period.
Rosa Ramalho (1888–1977) was the working name of the noted Portuguese ceramic artist Rosa Barbosa Lopes. Although she learnt pottery whilst still young, it wasn’t until after her husband’s death when she was aged 68, that she began to create the figures that would establish her fame. Rosa was enroled as a Dame in the Order of Saint James of the Sword and in 1968 awarded the medal “As Artes ao Serviço da Nação” (Arts in Service to the Nation). SEE online video CLICK HERE
