Boy & Dog – Art Pottery Figure c1930 – stock #21717

An adorable inter wars period art pottery figure of a seated boy with his terrier dog. It is hollow cast with hand finished detail decorated with hand painted pastel toned glazes. No definite signature -although hints can be seen within the textured finish on the plinth.

Very difficult to attribute this work to an artist. As it is hollow cast, it would suggest that it was part of an edition rather than a one off. Suggested artists include; Helen Florence Wickham (1884­-1982), M Blyth or Gladys Mary Hibberd (Exhibited 1927-35)

This example has a cylindrical form and is decorated with caorse combed vertical lines within lightly incised top and bottom borders. In a basi terracotta colour with black within the decoration.

Impressed Briglin on the foot rim.

A super looking “majolica” ware vase by Thomas Forester & Sons decorated and signed R Dean. It has an organic form with rolled and twisted tip rim and covered with incised and slip painted foliage patterns.

Signed on the undeside “R Dean” for their art director Roger Dean. Most likely dating to the early 1920’s.

A great looking art deco period Wedgwood pottery vase from the Veronese range of art wares dating to c1930. This example has a vivid pinky red red glaze and decorated with a silver lustre pattern of a stylised flower with leaves. This pattern was most likely designed by Alfred or Louise Powell.

Various impressed and painted marks on the underside including pattern number D17.

An outstanding large folk art pottery figurine of a flower Queen by the Portugese artist Rosa Ramalho. It is naively modelled and glazzed in a rich mustard yellow colour. Signed RR on the foot rim. There are some areas of glaze flaking which have been over-painted – most likely in period.

Rosa Ramalho (1888–1977) was the working name of the noted Portuguese ceramic artist Rosa Barbosa Lopes. Although she learnt pottery whilst still young, it wasn’t until after her husband’s death when she was aged 68, that she began to create the figures that would establish her fame. Rosa was enroled as a Dame in the Order of Saint James of the Sword and in 1968 awarded the medal “As Artes ao Serviço da Nação” (Arts in Service to the Nation). SEE online video CLICK HERE
