Stanislas Reychan – Owl Figure

Stanislas Reychan – Owl Figure – stock #19718

A charming studio pottery model of an Owl by the anglo/austrian/polish artist potter Stanislas Reychan porbably dating to the 1960’s. It is hand modelled and glazed in an off white colour with the red pottery showing through.

Stanislas Reychen was born in Vienna in 1897. His father was Polish and his mother Austrian. He served as a cadet officer in the Austro-Hungarian army during WW1 after which he studied at the Lvov Technical College. He worked as a motorcycle importer, film extra, and car hire firm before joining the Polish Army in France in 1940, shortly after he ended up in England. He was made a “Member of the British Empire” in 1944 for services to the allied cause and ended his service in 1949 as a major.

After the war he became interested in pottery and studied at St Martin’s School of Art under Walter Marsden and The Central School of Art under Dora Billington. He worked from a studio in St Johns Wood from 1953 until 1985, potting until he was eighty-eight. He was a member of the Craftsmen Potters’ Association, Red Rose Guild of Craftsmen and Hampstead Artists’ Council. He was widely respected and exhibited extensively including at; Royal Academy, Heal’s Mansard Gallery, Bluecoats Gallery in Liverpool and won a silver medal in 1960 at the Paris Salon.

His work is included in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum with a figure titled ‘Prometheus Chained’, hand modelled red earthenware figure, tin-glazed and painted in turquoise, blue and manganese. Donated by the artist c1980-1985. Also in the collection of Leicester Museum and Art Gallery.

He was an early member of the ‘Craftsmen Potters Association’ and once during a meeting, where another member commented that ‘Your work is fit only for the fairground!’ he defended himself by stating ‘These are all my children’.
