Langley Ware – John Spencer Sgraffitto Vase – stock #69916

This is a Lovatts Langley Pottery vase designed and decorated by John Spencer and dating to c1939. It has a black glaze at the top fading to a more greyish tone at the base. It is decorated with a sgraffitto patern around the central part and on the top rim.

Printed marks on the underside.

M S Binyon – Cockerel

M S Binyon – Cockerel – stock #45016

A super art pottery model of a Chicken by the artist potter Miss Mary Sims Binyon (1882-1976). Hollow cast hand finished detailing it is glaze in a satin cream colour with pink details. It is raised on a hexagonal plinth and signed on the underside.

She was a pupil at the Bushey School of Painting between 1906 and 1916, training under Lucy Kemp-Welch. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1916. See my blog posting about this artist for pictures of other items Link –  meridiangallery.blogspot.co.uk

A Monart art glass vase with a super rare colourway. This example has a opal coloured inner layer with green and white spiral and ribbed surface decoration. Not sure how to classify this one, similar to the “stoneware” decorations. Shape D and size X. Drilled for lampbase conversion.

Brangwyn Ware – Wall Plate

Royal Doulton Brangwyn Ware – Wall Plate – dated 1934 – stock #14316

A large and scare Royal Doulton “Brangwyn Ware” wall plate decorated with an art period design of wheat sheaves, grapes and leaves. Fully marked on the underside with Royal doulton factory mark, “Brangwyn Ware”, pattern number D5034 and impressed date 10/34 for 1934. Hole in foot rim for hanging.

These wares were designed by the influencial British artist, Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) for doulton in the early 1930’s.

An interesting art pottery model of a tortoise made by the Langley Mill Pottery and dating to the mid 1930’s. It has good modelling and detail and is decorated in slate grey and tan coloured glazes.This figure was made in 3 sizes and I am fairly sure that this is the larger of the range.
