Crown Ducal – Charlotte Rhead Byzantine Ewer – stock #33318

A fine looking art deco design art pottery ewer made by Crown Ducal and designed by Charlotte Rhead with stylised flowers and leaves in yellow, orange, blue amd greem on a stimpled orange back ground glaze. This example is decorated with the “Byzantine” pattern which was in production from c1933.

Marked on the underside with a printed makers mark of “Crown Ducal England” under a crown. This mark was in use from c1932 until c1938. Also signed with a tubelined “Rhead” signature.

Walsh Glass – Leaf Biscuit Barrel – stock #33218

A mid 1930s John Walsh Walsh glass biscuit barrel decorated with the cut “Leaf” pattern designed by Clyne Farquharson. Marked on the underside “Walsh England”

William Clyne Farquharson (1906-1978) trained at the Mosely Road Art School in Birmingham before joining John Walsh Walsh glass in 1924 chief draughtsman while continuing his studies at the Central Art School. From c1934 he created original designs which moved away from the traditional complex cut glass patterns and introduced simpler flute cut patterns such as Barry, Leaf, Albany and Kendal. He remained with the company until the closure of the factory in 1951.

Royal Cauldon – Cairo Ware “Copia” Bowl – stock #32918

A fine British art pottery bowl decorated with a hand painted floral and fruit cornucopia design in rich green, grey and mauve colours. Made by Royal Cauldon and from the “Cairo Ware” range of art wares made during the 1920s.

This example is decorated with the Copia pattern the “octagonal bowl 1” shape. Many of these pattern were designed by Frederick Rhead.

Charlotte Rhead – Bursley Ware Peony Vase – Pattern No TL43 – stock #30018

An delightful original art deco period vase designed by Charlotte Rhead for Bursley Ware and dating to c1950. It is decorated with a tubeline pattern titled “Peony” which has a tubeline pattern of wind swept peony flowers and leaves in blue tones with a mottled cream background.

Printed marks on the back; “Bursley Ware Charlotte Rhead England” together with pattern number TL43. Similar pattern illustrated in “Collecting Rhead Pottery” by Bernard Bumpus in Plate 104 on Page 72.

A fine looking art deco pattern Wedgwood pottery vase designed by Keith Murray (1892-1981). It has slightly flared trumpet shape with straight sides etched with parallel bands and raised on a short foot. Decorated with a satin off white “Moonstone” glaze.

Printed circular “KM” monogram mark on the underside to suggest a 1940’s date.

A post war art deco -ish design Whitefriars Glass vase in a ruby red colour with a spiral trailed decoration. There is slight orange amber coloured ring around the outer edge of the foot rim.

Understood to be shape 9296 which is illustrated in the 1957 Whitefriars sales catalogue.
