Frederick Alfred Rhead
(1857-1933)
Pottery designer and decorator. He trained under ML Solon at
Minton from 1872. From 1878 he was working at Wedgwood on slip and sgcraffito
decorated wares, some of which was shown at the 1878 Paris Exhibition. he had
left Wedgwood by 1883 and went on to work at E J Bodley, Brownfields, Wood,
Cauldon (1929-33) and Wileman.
Louis Rhead
(1858-1927)
Brother of Alfred. He too trained at Minton and worked at
Wedgwood from 1878. He had studied at the Newcastle School of Art and at South
Kensington Schools. he briefly returned to Wedgwood as a designer before moving
to America where he became a successful illustrator and poster artist. He
returned to England in 1896.
