Pembury Ware
Peters Philip & Co before 1886 - 1938

This pottery was founded by Philip Peters, the landlord of the Royal Oak public house, after the discovery of clay at the bottom of his garden sometime before 1886.He is listed in a local directory dated 1886 as a "brick and pottery" manufacturer. However by 1889 the entry was as a maker of "fine art pottery".

He had two bottle kilns fired using off cut from Hop poles. It is understood that there were a limited number of firings as it took the potters 4/5 months to fill the kiln !! even allowing for the brick in the kilns used for saggars, which shielded the pot from the effects of the wood ash.

The ware are of a rustic country nature, not really fine art pottery they advertised. The pots had a brick red body with interesting experimental glazes. The ware were marked with an impressed "Pembury Ware" and some with TH.

The pot shown (click on thumbnail to enlarge) here has a handle similar to those of the Upchurch and Isle of Wight potteries - perhaps an Edward Baker connection ?

The pottery ceased trading c1938 after an unsuccessful change to coal firing.
