Isle of Wight Handcraft Pottery  1926 - 1938

This firm was established by Samuel Edgar Saunders in  1926 in a brickworks at Gunville, Carisbrooke which had formerly been Pritchett and Co Ltd. Saunder himself  was a business man who owned Saunders Ltd  a boat and Seaplane builder ( Saunders-Rowe Aviation). He employed a manager, F J Mursell who engaged potters from Staffordshire.

They appear to have had some Royal Patronage and had a London retail outlet at 15 Gamage Building, Holburn. After the death of Samuel the pottery was run by his son Hulbert and at this time the manager was Edward Bagley. It is understood the the pottery closed after he was dismissed for making and selling ceramic roundell without permission.

They produced mainly vessels such as vases, jugs, bowls and covered pots. There earlier works are characterised by a matt glaze with hand painted usually geometric patterns in coloured glazes. The more usually encountered items are those in a high gloss leadless glaze usually turquoises, blue and purples.

Marks

Earlier items have a circular impressed mark with Isle of Wight Pottery around the inside some with SES mongramme within the circle. Later marks are a printed circular mark with monogramme often blurred. Painted shape/glaze marks appear.
