John Spencer
ARCA, RMS born 1904

He was born in Westoughton and trained at the Wigan Art School. Bolton Art School and the Royal College of Art, South Kensington. He gradusted from there on the 20th August 1934 with a diploma of Associate ship in Design.

Initially he worked as a designer for Beecham's Powders before moving to Pilkington's.  He worked for Pilkington's from 1936 until 1938 and then briefly for Lovatt's Langley before the start of the Second World War. During the war worked as an artist for Rolls Royce. From 1949 he was director at Pearson's of Chesterfield.

Spencer continued to paint and was elected as a member of the Royal Miniature Society on 1946.

At Pilkington's he worked with W S Mycock and Edmund Kent executing sgcraffito designs and design a number of figures including the Sea Lion, Penguin and bison. At Lovatts and Pearson's he produced very similar sgcraffito decorated stoneware. Probably designed figures at Pearsons.
