| Harold Steward Rathbone
(1858 - 1929)
He was an artist who specialised in portraits and
figural subjects. He trained at the Slade School of Art in London, in Paris and
under the artist Ford Maddox Brown. His father was the chairman of the art and
exhibitions sub committee of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He exhibited
widely including 118 works at the Walker Art Gallery, 4 at the Glasgow Institute
and 3 at the Royal Cambrian Academy.
He was co-founder and art director of the
Della Robbia Pottery,
Birkenhead.
Eric Ravilious (1903 - 44)
He was an artist and designer, who was born in London and trained at the
Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In 1940 he was appointed
an official war artist, recording naval aspects of the war. He was killed in
1942 whilst flying with Coastal Command near Iceland.
He designed ceramics for E Brain (foley), A J Wilkinson and Wedgwood. He is
predominantly remembered for designs commissioned by
Wedgwood between 1936 and 1940 although many of
the designs were not issued until the 1950's due to War restrictions.
The designs include; 1937 Coronation mugs for Edward VIII and George VI,
Afternoon Tea, Alphabet Series, Christmas Pudding, Garden, Garden
Impliments, Persephone, Travel, Boat Race cup and bowl, the Barleston mug and
the Four Continents bowl. The Coronation mug and Persephone were adapted for the
1953 coronation.
As an artist he exhibited at the Leicester Art Gallery, Redfern Gallery and
Arthur Tooth & Son Gallery.
Richard Llewellyn Benson Rathbone
(1864 - 1939)
he was a designer of metalwork, silver and jewellery.
Red Rose Guild est
1920 - 1962
The Red Rose Guild was founded in 1920 and continued until 1963 with a break
1940-46 during World War II.
The guild was established after an exhibition at the Houldsworth Hall in
Manchester organised by the wood engraver Margaret Pilkington, There first
official exhibition as the Red Rose Guild of Artworkers was held in October
1921with exhibitors including Phyllis Barron and Ethel Mairet and with founder
members including
Hugh Wallis.
Bernard Leach and William Staite Murray stared to exhibit from 1924 .

A commercial illustrator who was born in hulland trained at
a local school of art. a number of his designs were reproduced on Wedgwood
plate.

He was head of Industrial Design at
Canterbury College of Art.
