Denby
Denby, Derbyshire
Founded by William Bourne in 1809 for
his son Joseph after the discovery of a bed of fine stoneware clay in 1806. The
factory produced domestic salt glazed stoneware together with some sprigged
decorated vessels and spirit flasks in the form of personalities of the day.
These are often referred to as "Reform Flasks"
It wasn't until c1924 that Art Pottery
was made in any quantity with the introduction of the Danesby range.

| Bourne Denby's art wares are quite
extensive from the Danesby Ware ranges in the 1920's and 1930's to the
Glynn
College designs of the 1950's, 60's and 70's.The Danesby Wares including the
tube lined wares and
glaze effects such as Electric blue, Orient, Pastels and
Ivory. |
Their novelties included a myriad of
animals including rabbits, dogs, cats, giraffe, ducks, geese, lambs
and many
more. Often with these own names, such as Marmaduke the Rabbit, Fido or Buttons.
Together with novelty hot water bottles and ashtrays. |
